Beyond leather – here are 6 luxury cars with vegan-friendly and sustainable interiors

In recent years, sustainable development has become a development trend in the automotive industry. While not everyone in the manufacturing industry has yet to switch to greener ways of operating, many well-known luxury car brands are emerging as leaders in sustainable change. These premium automakers are making more conservative vehicle production choices and opting for eco-friendly vehicle interior solutions. Here are six luxury vehicles that offer sustainable or vegan-friendly interiors.
Since 2016, the Tesla Model 3 Tesla has been offering cloth upholstery as an alternative to leather. The company is known to have been working closely with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to manufacture synthetic leather. The Tesla Model 3 is one of the company's 100% vegan-friendly premium cars, as the interior of the vehicle is made entirely of synthetic materials, including the steering wheel. No matter which vehicle version you choose, animal derivatives are not an option as add-ons. Tesla's sustainable interior is dirt-resistant, sturdy, and extremely comfortable.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque With the release of the Range Rover Evoque, ethical consumer enthusiasts of Land Rover now have the option of enhancing their car interiors with a non-leather vegan-friendly alternative. The prestigious automotive company offers a range of premium seat upholstery options using sustainable materials such as wool-polyester blends and eucalyptus blends. Eucalyptus Melange is a hybrid vegetable product consisting of 70% polyester and 30% drawn fibers. The wool-blend product, on the other hand, is a combination of synthetic suede material and wool, produced using 53% recycled plastic bottles. This sustainable non-leather alternative was developed by Land Rover together with Kvadrat, a leading European textile company. The Range Rover Evoque is said to be composed of up to 33kg of recycled and natural materials. This premium SUV can be an excellent choice for families and ethically responsible consumers as it comfortably accommodates two top-of-the-line car seats.

BMW i3 The BMW Group is highly regarded for its dedication to sustainability, not only in the materials they use, but also in their manufacturing and development processes. One of the greenest BMW cars you can buy from this fully sustainable company is the BMW i3. This electric car is 95% recyclable and made mostly of carbon fiber. When the BMW i3 is scrapped, it does not have any adverse impact on the environment, as most of its vehicle components do not end up in landfills. Some of the vegan-friendly materials used in this innovative vehicle include 40% virgin wool, 100% olive leaf tanned leather, 90% eucalyptus and 30% kenaf.

Mini Cooper Hatch The Mini Hatch is another vegan-friendly luxury car on the auto market. This small and attractive car seat is 70% recycled and the fabric seat is 100% recycled. The handbrake and gear lever of the Mini Hatch are made of faux leather. In addition to the Mini Hatch, the prestigious British company has also announced that leather upholstery will no longer be available on their next Mini models.

Porsche Taycan The German car company is committed to making sustainable luxury goods. The Porsche Taycan is the first all-electric Porsche sports car to offer a vegan leather interior option. Consumers can choose between two interior options: a vegan microfiber version or tanned club leather. The vegan option is made using "Race-Tex," a premium material partially composed of recycled polyester. According to Porsche, this cruelty-free leather produces 80 percent less carbon dioxide than animal leather. In addition, the Porsche Taycan's floor mats and carpets feature Econyl, a recycled fiber material developed from recycled fishing nets. Automotive consumers who aren't quite ready for a zero-leather interior can opt for sustainable olive leaf tanned leather.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Mercedes-Benz is another luxury car brand pursuing sustainable change. While the Mercedes-Benz A-Class isn't purely electric yet, the luxury car's interior is perfectly vegan-friendly. Consumers can opt for seats made from "Artico Leather," a vinyl leather material that is relatively less expensive than traditional leather equivalents. However, it must be noted that replacing the gear lever and steering wheel with Artico leather is still not an option.

For luxury automakers, driving sustainable interiors means better market opportunities, less production waste, environmentally friendly workflow principles, increased brand value, cleaner practices, lower production costs and more Eco-friendly operation. Not only can they enjoy designing premium car interiors with a clearer conscience, but they can also cater to a wider range of consumers from all social classes.
